A European couple, Clara and Daniel, had just held their wedding in an ancient castle in Italy. As a couple who loves new experiences, they decided to make Bali their honeymoon destination.
Their inspiration came from a magazine article that highlighted the uniqueness of the melukat or purificatory ritual, a Balinese spiritual tradition that aims to cleanse the body and soul.
Journey to Bali
Upon arriving in Bali, they were greeted by warm air and friendly smiles from the locals. The hotel they chose was located in the Ubud area, surrounded by green rice fields and the soothing sound of the river. Their tour guide, Made, explained that the melukat ritual would be performed at Tirta Empul Temple, a sacred temple famous for its spring water believed to have healing powers.
On a bright morning, Clara and Daniel wore the Balinese traditional clothes that had been provided. Clara felt graceful in a kebaya with soft colors, while Daniel wore a sarong and udeng cloth or headdress that made him look in harmony with the surrounding atmosphere. They were guided by a temple priest (ceremonial leader) who explained the steps of the melukat ritual.
As holy water flowed over their heads, Clara felt invisible burdens slowly disappear. Daniel, who was initially skeptical, also felt a deep sense of peace. After the ceremony was over, they were given small offerings as a sign of gratitude to nature and the gods.
Balinese Spa Treatment
After a calming spiritual experience, Clara and Daniel continued their day by trying a Balinese spa at a luxury resort. The spa offers traditional treatments with natural ingredients such as coconut oil, jasmine flowers, and local spices. They enjoyed a gentle massage combined with aromatherapy, providing total relaxation after their long journey.
“This is more than just a body treatment,” said Clara. “This is art.”
Daniel nodded in agreement as he sipped the warm ginger tea served after the treatment.
Enjoying Local Cuisine
The last day in Ubud was spent exploring local cuisine. They tasted the rich Balinese mixed rice, savory sate lilit, and unique lawar. Clara fell in love with the refreshing young coconut ice, while Daniel couldn’t stop praising the spicy and delicious taste of ayam betutu.
Always full of stories, Made explains the philosophy behind each dish. “Food in Bali is not just about taste, but also how we respect nature and tradition,” he says.
An Unforgettable Ending
As their plane took off from Ngurah Rai Airport, Clara and Daniel felt that their trip to Bali was more than just a honeymoon. It was a spiritual, physical, and emotional journey that deepened their relationship.
“Bali not only gave us beautiful scenery, but also experiences that touched our souls,” Clara says as she holds Daniel’s hand. They both agree that Bali is a place they will always remember and, one day, they will definitely return.
