About the Temple and Location
The Ulundanu Beratan Temple tourist area is located at Candikuning Village, Baturiti, and Tabanan. Geographically, it is halfway between North Bali and South Bali. Geographically, this temple is located approximately 1200 meters above sea level and surrounded by beautiful mountainous nature.
Meanwhile, the closest tourist attraction around this area is the Candikuning agro market, near the intersection to the Bedugul Botanical Gardens as well as the selfie spot at the entrance gates of Bali Handara.
Ulundanu Beratan Temple is a favorite among domestic and foreign tourists because of the beauty of the temple and its landscape. When the lake water level is normal or stagnant, this temple will looks floating and separated from the main building of the temple complex.
Within the Ulundanu Beratan Temple complex, there are five temples and one Buddhist stupa. The five temples are Penataran Agung Temple (worship of Tri Purusha Shiva), Dalem Purwa Temple (worship of Goddess Durga), Taman Beiji Temple (place to ask for holy water and purify ceremonial paraphernalia), 11-tiered Meru Shrine Temple (worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Danu) and 3-tiered Lingga Petak Temple (in the middle of Lake Beratan) and Prajapati Temple (functioning as Goddess Durga’s abode).
This iconic temple has become the mascot of Bali tourism. In other words, as soon as people see the picture of this temple, they will immediately be able to recognize or associate it with the Bali destination.
History
Historically, this temple was built by I Gusti Agung Putu of the Mengwi kingdom in 1556 Saka (1634 AD) and there are four satakan or traditional community groups from the customary villages around the temple, namely the Satakan Candi Kuning covering (5 customary villages), Satakan Bangah (3), Satakan Antapan (4) and Satakan Baturiti (6).
The area around the temple complex is believed to have been used as a place of worship and a center for religious activities since the megalithic era. To the left of the temple there is a sarcophagus and slate which is thought to date from around 500 BC. The existence of the temple itself has been recorded since 1556. Then, it was rebuilt in 1633.
