July 15 and 25, 2015
FESTIVE celebration will be carried by the Hindus in Bali and surrounding areas this July. It is called Galungan and Kuningan (July 15 & 25) falling every 210 days. It is meant to celebrate the triumph of dharma (truth) against adharma (untruth). People say prayers to God and ancestors at family and public temples.
Probably, this ten-day festival is the most impressive among the Hindu’s religious celebrations made throughout the year. Before the celebration, people install penjor or bamboo pole equipped with cakes, fruits and tuber symbolizing the crops offered to God and ancestors. Besides, it is also accompanied with bamboo shrine platform to put the offerings.
All customary villages in Bali set up beautiful penjor. Thus, they look so impressive. So, travelers should not miss this opportunity to see these beautiful spectacles.
