At the opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2024 Parade on Saturday (15 June), Kerta Village from the Gianyar District art envoy exhibited a sculpture of a Legong Dancer made from woven bamboo.
Innovation in Woven Bamboo Sculpture Art
At the opening and release of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2024 parade which was held in front of the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Denpasar, the Gianyar District art envoy demonstrated a special work of art: a statue of a Legong Dancer made from woven bamboo. This statue displays dynamic, lively and natural movements, which reflect the beauty and elegance of the Balinese Legong dance.
The frame of this statue is made of flexible wire, which makes it easy to shape according to the dancer’s body texture and movements. According to several of the artists involved, the process of making this woven bamboo statue took around seven days to make and cost around 20 million rupiahs.
Making process
The process of making this statue was carried out in mutual cooperation by sekaa taruna or customary village youth club. These young people worked together under the guidance of senior artists, combining traditional skills with modern innovation to create extraordinary, innovative works of art.
Kerta Village has succeeded in creating their first woven bamboo statue, showing high dedication and creativity. These artists hope that their innovation can inspire other regions to explore and develop the art of woven bamboo sculpture and explore their artistic potential.
